Yup, that’s right. It’s exactly what it sounds like. A sorority for natural hair. As of July 4, 2011(Afro Day) Pi Nappa Kappa was established “to provide a platform for natural hair women around the world to come together to discuss their natural hair and living lifestyles” as stated on their website. Like any other sororities they sorority colors, pink, turquoise blue, and chocolate brown, a sorority flower, the African violet, and even a hand sign. But most importantly founding principle “Self Love, Sisterly Love, Community Service, Teamwork and support for our ‘natural sisters’ around the world and to aide in their spiritual and personal growth as women of color. Pi Nappa Kappa Sorority’s ultimate is to be a 'universally-recognized' natural hair and natural living sorority for women of color.”

I’m all for the fellowship of curly girls all over the world but I don’t deem hair important enough to start a sorority over. I understand that natural hair can sometimes receive negative criticism but today in 2012 natural does not hold any body back. Maybe fifty years ago natural hair may have been viewed as improper, but today people are not  being deny jobs or an education simply because of their hair.

Once again I will say I am all for the fellowship of curly girls all over the world but had there been a sorority for chemically straighten hair the naturally hair community would had cow!!!! Have women been deny membership to other sororities because of their natural hair? Are natural hair forums, blogs and you tube videos not enough?  And am I late? Is everyone in the natural hair community over this?

Would you join this sorority or any other natural hair sorority? I still have questions so at this moment, I would not join this sorority or any other like this. Because although putting out a positive message, I still feel that it is forcing a division amongst women of color over some as trivial as hair. What are your thoughts about this? Would you join?

Thanks to old man winter, I've spent the entire weekend in the house. And yeah that was fine Saturday. I had leftover chinese food and netflix, I was completely content with life. But then Sunday rolled and I got bored out of my mind. And with an itchy scalp killing me I decided it was time to do my hair. So I did a little research to see what sooth my scalp, and TADA!!! I found it!!!! A rosemary rinse!! Not only does this rinse make hair shiner, it also brings out the highlights in even the darkest hair(mine!!!). The vinegar in the rinse restores natural pH which will help prevent an itchy scalp. The best thing about this rinse is it was easy to make. All you need is rosemary water and apple cider vinegar (white vinegar works as well).

  1. Place 2 tablespoons of rosemary in a pitcher.
  2. Add 2 cups of boiling water to the pitcher and let it sit for about 10- 2- minutes.
  3. Strain out the rosemary leaves and let cool.
  4. Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar.
  5. Rinse over hair after washed and conditioned. Style as normal
This rinse does have an odor to it but once the hair is dry the odor is gone. I made the rinse before I shampooed and conditioned to ensure that the water had cooled. And that's it no more dry  itchy scalp, no more dull winter hair and quick way to spice up your hair color. Let me know how is works for you!!
Peace,
Danielle

Going Natural: A Fad or A Movement

PictureSolange, OG Curl Goddess
Have you noticed an increase of naturals around you? I certainly have and yet I don’t know how to feel about it. One side of me is happy(high-fives all around) to see women embracing their natural hair. The other feel like these women are big phonies!!!! Only having natural hair because it’s “in.” When I was transitioning a few years ago, I constantly got stares everywhere I went. People just couldn’t seem to understand why one would not want to get a relaxer. Now that they are more naturals I question their motives? Did they become natural because it’s more accepted and they feel more comfortable with their self or simply because it’s cute on Solange and will be cute on them as well.

The hair care industry has certain noticed the increase. Now every major hair care company have products geared specifically towards curly and products for naturally curly hair are making their way on the shelves of Target and Walmart. With this commercial success, I again question sincerity. Is this movement about acceptance of one’s natural self or about the look of natural?

Or am I just kicking up dust and creating an issue that isn’t there? This could be true. Because hair is grown from one’s physical being, it is their property. Giving them the right to do as they please. And being an artist, I feel that one should be able to express themselves in any avenue possible (hair being one of those avenue). Meaning if you what to grease it and weave it up, go head then, you want to shave the middle of your head, get girl,  but if want to be natural please be sincere!!!! Do it because you no longer want to be a slave to hair appointments and flatirons, you no longer want to scared of the rain or going to gym in fearing the life your precious “edges.”…..I know I went a little far but you get the point. lol.

Steph and I plan on interviewing women about their decision on going. I look forward to hearing different perspective on the topic. What do you think?

Peace
Danielle
